Getting to and travelling around Sunderland

Sunderland is situated on the North East coast and is connected to the rest of the UK by excellent road and rail links. It is accessible from the A1(M), the main north-south road link from London and Scotland. Sunderland is a compact city and once you arrive you can travel hassle-free by jumping on one of the the local buses or a Tyne and Wear Metro to get around the city centre, the coast and further afield to Washington and Houghton-le-Spring. Sunderland also has a network of scenic cycle routes and public footpaths that are just waiting to be explored!

Rail

Travelling to Sunderland only takes 3 hours from London Kings Cross on direct trains, which also stop at stations including Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe, Darlington, Northallerton, Thirsk, York and Peterborough.

Air

Sunderland is also accessible by major airlines through Newcastle International and Durham Tees Valley airports. It takes approximately 59 minutes on the local metro services from Newcastle International to Sunderland.

Sea

DFDS Seaways operate daily crossings from Ijmuiden in Holland.  The International Passenger Terminal at North Shields is only 12 miles from Sunderland and takes about 25 minutes in the car or approximately 1 hour by public transport.

Coach

Park Lane Interchange is the main bus station in the the city centre where coaches pick up and drop off. When you arrive you can access local buses or metro services to get around.

Getting around Sunderland

Bus

Sunderland has excellent bus networks serving the whole area of Sunderland, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring and even further to Newcastle and Durham.

The Sunderland Connect Bus (700) is your route to many of the main attractions in the city centre and in the summer it also stops at Roker beach. It is free for University of Sunderland students with a valid student ID, it can also be used by local residents. Visitors can enjoy the attractions with an all day ticket costing as little as £2.10, a family ticket (two adults and up to three children) £8 and a weekly ticket is only £11.

Metro

The Tyne and Wear Metro light-rail service is an easy means of getting around Sunderland, with trains running to and from Sunderland approximately every 12 minutes. There are direct links to Newcastle Central Station (30 mins) and Newcastle International Airport (59 mins).

Parking

There are over 3,500 car parking spaces making it easy to access attractions, events, green spaces and restaurants in Sunderland.

Car hire

You can hire a car from many outlets, the main ones in Sunderland are Enterprise on North Bridge Street or Europcar on Brook Street. Nationwide Hire also cover the whole of the UK.

Walking and cycling

There are many public footpaths and cycle routes in Sunderland that you can discover.
